Outfit of the Rainy Day

Friday, 21 March 2014

Being in Manchester means having to be an expert at dressing for every type of weather.  Who said rainy days were boring?

Outfit of the Day...

Whilst we finally have some nice weather, I thought I would take full advantage and whip out my beloved turquoise trousers. A big thanks to my friend Laura for taking these pictures for me.

Saturday night at the movies, who cares what picture we see ... as long as its 'The Book Thief'

Tuesday, 11 March 2014

As many readers of Markus Zusak's 'The Book Thief' will know, reading the book can bring on a 'post-book trauma' as after chapters of beautiful narrative, your heart is handed to you on a plate. I, myself finished the book two hours into a nine hour flight, leaving me with nothing other to do than stare blankly at the back of the seat in front of me for the next seven hours.

So when I saw the film advertised, I was concerned as we all are when a book we consider family is adapted for film. The same questions always remain: Do I go see the film? Will it be as good as the book? Will this be water for elephants all over again? So with this in mind I decided to brave it out of pure curiosity.  There is only one word for the casting...FLAWLESS. Liesel played by Sophie Nelisse embodies everything I imagined whilst reading the book. Every actor/actress lent themselves perfectly to their character, Geoffrey Rush playing the playful Hans Hubermann opposite a stern but warm Emily Watson. The film could have become very somber leaving the audience feeling downhearted however this balanced with cheery scenes that seem so honest and simple that they could be a reflection of everyday life.

Without giving too much away the film did the book a considerable amount of justice, highlighting how human life can suffer so much heartbreak, loss and cruelty and yet remain extraordinarily ordinary.
I urge you to see the film and beg, borrow or steal the book.
